The first actions of the Territorial Programme +SOLO +VIDA began in November to conserve this valuable natural resource!
We began the direct seeding of permanent pasture on the farms of our partner farmers. Short-cycle species were chosen as a way to adapt the pastures to the lower rainfall forecast increased by climate change and more adapted to the soil and climate conditions of the Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana, such as subterranean clover, white clover, serradella and perennial ryegrass. More productive pastures increase the organic matter and the water retention capacity of the soil, while protecting it from erosion.
What are the benefits of direct seeding with minimum tillage?
- They have a reduced impact on the soil;
- They improve pasture productivity with lower installation costs than conventional sowing;
- They reduce soil exposure and prevent erosion caused by rain and wind;
- They are a source of CO2 capture and fixation and therefore mitigate climate change;
Healthy soils contribute to more resilient trees, the central elements of the cork oak forest (Montado) included in the agrosilvopastoral system.
