The good practices to fight desertification of +SOLO +VIDA were given as an example during the presentation of the REA Alentejo.
On March 17, +SOLO +VIDA and LIFE Desert-Adapt disclosed their actions to combat desertification, during the presentation of the REA ALENTEJO to the media, at the Parque Biológico da Cabeça Gorda.
Also led by ADPM Mértola, the REA Alentejo proposes interventions for the restoration of agrosilvopastoral systems in the semi-arid areas of southeastern Portugal to mitigate the effects of climate change already felt in this territory, namely the progressive reduction of water availability, the degradation of ecosystems and the loss of fertile soil.
In this session, researchers from the project’s partner entities, Maria José Roxo (FCSH) and Cristina Branquinho (FCUL) revealed unpublished data: 94% of Baixo Alentejo’s NUTS is susceptible to desertification and, in 80 years, the average value of the region has fallen by half.
During the afternoon, there was also the opportunity to learn about the work carried out by LIFE Desert-Adapt, another project that complements the work of +SOLO +VIDA and REA Alentejo, which aims to restore the vitality of the Montado in this forest area, located in the parish of Cabeça Gorda.
